Beacon Hill Academy (previously High Arcal School)

Acting Principal: Sukhjot Dhami

Inspected November 2015 – Overall effectiveness – good

High Arcal converted to Academy status on 1st December 2011 and has in recent years made significant improvements in a number of areas, including increased rates of progress for learners in English and mathematics. In 2016 there was a slight widening in the attainment gap between the most disadvantaged learners and other students but in the three years prior to that it had been closing.

In order to move towards an outstanding rating the school is concentrating on extending the challenge for its most-able pupils and increasing the proportion of outstanding teaching.

Students are seen to achieve positive destinations with 93% progressing to further study and 5% going into employment with training or Apprenticeships.

Attendance is averaging at 95%.

St James Academy (previously Castle High School)

Acting Principal: Ian Moore

Inspected February 2016 – Overall effectiveness – requires improvement

Ofsted found the school had several key strengths, including leadership and management which was underpinned by high expectations for students and staff, which in turn was raising standards. The school was found to be a harmonious community in which students learnt well in lessons.

Areas which were identified for improvement included the fact too few pupils were seen to be making the progress expected of them, with too few learners achieving five or more GCSE A* to C grades, including in English and mathematics.

The school has a strong inclusive ethos with 37 different languages spoken as first languages amongst its intake. The number of students with Special Educational Needs is 144 which is 22% of the school population.

Attendance is averaging 94%.

Pegasus Academy (previously Holly Hall Academy)

Principal: Andy Landers

Inspected May 2015 - Overall effectiveness - inadequate

The last Ofsted Inspection identified the school’s strengths as being the provision of a balanced work related curriculum that appealed to students’ interests and the good behaviour of the majority of pupils. Areas for development included the need to increase the attainment of students so that it is closer to national expectations, and the need to raise the quality of teaching across the board but particularly in Science.

An interim inspection by Ofsted took place in September 2018 and reported that Pegasus Academy has improved GCSE results, improved attendance, improved behaviour and improved progress in every year group throughout the school. Other positive findings recorded by the Inspector included:

  • There is a cohesive leadership team. High expectations are evident
  • There is clarity about the academy’s strengths and weaknesses and effective actions are being taken to address these
  • Pupils say that the quality has improved
  • Behaviour is improving: pupils and staff confirmed this

Pegasus is a specialist college for mathematics and computing with a strong commitment to using ICT across the curriculum.

Attendance is averaging 92.5%.

The Link Academy (previously Hillcrest School and Community College)

Principal: Emma Edwards-Morgan

Inspected November 2016 – Overall effectiveness – inadequate

Whilst the overall rating of the Inspection identified key development areas it was acknowledged that leaders and governors had reacted well to the poor GCSE results of 2016, although it was too early to assess the impact of these actions.

Further strengths were identified as the school’s careers development programme and the work of the school’s off-site inclusion centre, which supports its most vulnerable learners.

Areas to be addressed include poor GCSE outcomes in most subjects and the need to improve attendance across the board but particularly for SEN learners and those from the most disadvantaged backgrounds.

The school has a very strong arts and performing arts culture with these seen as the heartbeat of the school.

Attendance is averaging 95%.
